Graston Technique® blev oprindeligt udtænkt af en amatøratlet, som led af en knæskade i forbindelse med vandski. Han blev frustreret over den manglende fremgang under genoptræningsprocessen og med efterfølgende operation og konventionel behandling opsøgte han flere professionelle behandlere for råd.
Med hans egen faglige baggrund begyndte han at udforme flere instrumenter, i et forsøg på at behandle hans blødvævs skade.
Han oplevede hurtigt en succes på hans eget knæ, og tog kontakt til medicinsk- og udviklingsafdelingen på Ball Memorial Hospital and Ball State University i Muncie, Indianapolis, for at indlede et samarbejde med henblik på, at fuldt udvikle en teknik og et sæt af instrumenter. Ud fra denne samarbejdsindsats blev Graston Technique® terapi født.
I 1994, TherapyCare Resources Inc., moderselskabet til Graston Technique® terapi, åbnede et ambulatorium i Indianapolis, hvor alt data, indenfor en brede vifte af kroniske og akutte skader, blev samlet.
Fem år senere begyndte virksomheden at bruge en stor del af dets ressourcer på at lære og træne klinikker i Graston Technique® terapi, men med en forsat stor fokus på forsat ud udvikle og forske på området.

The Graston Technique® was originally conceived by an amateur athlete who suffered a debilitating knee injury while water skiing. Frustrated at the lack of rehabilitation progress following surgery and conventional therapy. After consulting several healthcare professionals, he decided to apply his professional background in machining to create several instruments to treat his soft tissue injury. Experiencing early success on his own knee, he collaborated with medical and research personnel at Ball Memorial Hospital and Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., to fully develop a technique and a set of instruments. From this collaborative effort, Graston Technique® therapy was born.
In 1994, TherapyCare Resources Inc., parent company of Graston Technique® therapy, opened an outpatient clinic in Indianapolis, where outcome data was gathered on a wide range of chronic and acute injuries. Five years later, the company turned all of its’ attention to teaching and training clinicians and continued research on the technique.
